Each coat here is a story that draws on the journey of the fabric that it emerged from. The textiles from which these works are made are themselves an inherited practice, the result of the designer’s mother’s long engagement with weaving, loom and fabric. The coat is intentionally revised, beyond the utilitarian, remembering sartorial histories differently, interpreted as individual artistic propositions.
In 2012, Marisa Gnanaraj launched her independent design label M Fact. With a fabric first approach to clothes making, her design ethos is one that is not trend-led. Working in conversation with her mother Marie Gnanaraj’s practice (textile artist), weavings are reimagined and repurposed into wearable objects.
