Putresce (2021/2022)
Mixed Media on Copper, 61cm x 122cm
‘Putresce’ began with hammered texturing that was repeated over and over. There are holes in this piece, from the rhythm that was built over an hour into a state of releasing rage. Following this, hydrochloric acid (HCL) was applied in careful sweeping motions, and then dripped and bled into mycelium cultures that were grown in vats and soil. HCL, unlike other oxidisation acids previously used, immediately turned into inky black. It is highly corrosive when activated and burns through flesh and bone, going beyond the physical, into the depths of shadows. Once developed, ‘Putresce’ was scratched and sanded down to reveal light. The piece almost looks like an aerial birds eye view of a landscape, which realises nature’s disposition. It exists of chaos and harmony. And the real issue is resistance to things as they are.
