Druvinka Puri Sri Lankan, b. 1971

Born in Sri Lanka and living in the Himalayas in India, Druvinka is a sadhu who practices the ancient occult traditions in India. She has developed a distinctive body of work over the last two decades, and is devoted to the deepest mysteries of the human experience as well as the transcendent realms beyond. However, her beginnings suggest that she was destined for this path. She comes from a family of artists, and she holds a BFA Honours from Visva Bharati Shanthiniketan, the renowned school founded by Rabindranath Tagore in West Bengal, India. Druvinka is one of the first artists ever exhibited by Barefoot Gallery Colombo and has worked with the gallery for over twenty years.

Because of this legacy of artistic talent, she paints intuitively. In her larger canvas paintings, layer upon transparent layer of washes in pale greys and blues, sepia and ochre come together to create a nebulous visual world containing myriad questions on the universe. Nepali bamboo paper is mounted on canvas to create the compartments that comprise her karma. In smaller pieces, Druvinka explores the religious symbols and landscapes of her home in India, a spiritual quest through art.
